Elementary Music Program

Singing, moving, creating, and reading music are skills, not gifts, and all students can develop their individual potential and interact with the music around them. This is a critical age for music learning, and developing musical skills and understandings is what we are all about!
K-5 General Music

All students receive music instruction based on national and state standards.

The curriculum focuses on six fundamental skill areas: singing, movement, literacy, improvisation, music evaluation, and instrument playing.

Classes are once a week for 50 minutes (35 minutes for UPK).

Emphasis on research-informed and engaging learning with a focus on student creativity.
K-2 Curriculum

Singing voice development.

Pitch matching through songs and patterns.

Expressive singing and musically.

Basic rhythm and meter movement.

Developing a collection of familiar songs.

3-5 Curriculum

Continued singing voice development.

Instrumental Music

All fourth- and fifth-grade students can learn to play instruments.
-
Instrument options include flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion.

Sign-up takes place in September of the fourth or fifth-grade year.
Weekly Lessons

Each student has one 30-minute lesson per week.

Lessons cover assembling instruments, producing good sound, maintaining a steady beat, and reading music.

Students have group and solo playing opportunities in each lesson.

Students are encouraged to practice at home for 20 minutes each evening.
Performing Opportunities

All fourth- and fifth-grade students can join music ensembles.

Ensembles meet twice a week for 50 minutes, before or after the school day.
-
Winter and spring performances are held in each elementary school.
-
Select fifth-grade students may participate in the Fifth-Grade District Chorus and/or the Fifth-Grade District Band for a districtwide concert.
