NYS Homeschool Requirements

  • NYS Part 100.10 Home Schooling Requirements

    One unit = 6,480 minutes /108 hours / 2 semesters / half year

    Two units= 216 hours / 4 semesters / 1 year

    Four units= 432 hours / 8 semesters / 2 years

     

    For grades 1-6: 900 hours per year required

    • *arithmetic
    • reading
    • spelling
    • writing
    • the English language
    • geography
    • United States history
    • science
    • health education
    • music
    • visual arts
    • physical education
    • *bilingual education and/or English as a second language where the need is indicated.

     

    For grades 7-8: 990 hours per year required

    The units required herein are cumulative requirements for both grades seven and eight.

    • English (two units – 1 year)
    • history and geography (two units – 1 year)
    • science (two units – 1 year)
    • mathematics (two units – 1 year)
    • physical education (on a regular basis)
    • health education (on a regular basis)
    • art (one-half unit – 1 semester)
    • music (one-half unit – 1 semester)
    • practical arts (on a regular basis)
    • library skills (on a regular basis)

    The following courses shall be taught at least once during the first eight grades: United States history, New York State history, and the Constitutions of the United States and New York State.

     

    For grades 9 through 12: 990 hours/year required (approx. 24.75 hours weekly for 10 months)

    The units required herein are cumulative requirements for grades 9 through 12. 

    • English (four units/ 2 years)
    • social studies (four units/ 2 years) which includes one unit (2 semesters) of American history, one-half unit (1 semester) in participation in government, and one- half unit (1 semester) of economics
    • mathematics (two units – 1 year)
    • science (two units – 1 year)
    • art and/or music (one unit – 2 semesters)
    • health education (one-half unit – 1 semester); physical education (two units – 1 year)
    • three units (6 semesters) of electives

     

    Education Law, sections 801, 804, 806 and 808, also require the following subjects to be covered during grades K-12:

    • patriotism and citizenship
    • health education regarding alcohol, drug and tobacco misuse
    • highway safety and traffic regulations, including bicycle safety
    • fire and arson prevention and safety
