Property tax exemptions

STAR Exemptions

New York State’s School Tax Relief (STAR) Program provides eligible homeowners with partial exemptions on their school property taxes. There are two types of STAR exemptions:

  • Basic STAR – available to homeowners with incomes under a certain threshold who use the property as their primary residence
  • Enhanced STAR – available to seniors (age 65 and older) with qualifying incomes

To apply or update your STAR registration, visit the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance STAR page or call (518) 457-2036.

Please note: STAR exemptions are handled directly through New York State and are not administered by the school district.

Veterans Exemptions

New York State offers several property tax exemptions for eligible veterans that may reduce the assessed value of their primary residence for school tax purposes. These exemptions are administered by your local assessor's office, not the school district, and must be applied for directly through your town.

There are three types of veterans exemptions:

  • Eligible Funds Exemption – based on the amount of money received from the U.S. government for purchasing a home
  • Alternative Veterans Exemption – based on service during wartime, combat, or receipt of an expeditionary medal
  • Cold War Veterans Exemption – available to veterans who served during the Cold War period

To learn more or apply, visit the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Veterans Exemption page or contact your local assessor’s office.

Please note: Gates Chili Central School District does not determine eligibility for veterans exemptions.
