GCHS Spartans read aloud to Armstrong Stars for Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month, Neil Armstrong Elementary School partnered with Gates Chili High School students to bring a special educational experience to the elementary classrooms.

On Feb. 27, 18 GCHS students visited Armstrong to read aloud to students, sharing inspiring stories about influential figures in Black history. The students selected a variety of books that highlight the achievements and legacies of Black history makers. The read-aloud session offered younger students the chance to explore these impactful stories while learning more about Black History Month.

“It’s a great opportunity for younger students to be inspired by the books we’re reading and gain exposure to Black History Month,” said Liani J., one of the GCHS student readers.

Titles read aloud included stories about famous Black figures such as athletes Steph Curry and Simone Biles, abolitionist Frederick Douglass and mathematician Katherine Johnson, to name a few.

To further engage the young readers, the high school students prepared activities and follow-up questions that encouraged reflection and discussion after the read-aloud sessions.

Laila G., another GCHS student reader, shared her thoughts on the experience: “It’s a great way to show the younger students who they can be in the future. Plus, it’s a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community and connect with the younger generation.”

This collaboration between the high school and elementary students created a memorable learning experience that celebrated the accomplishments of Black leaders and helped inspire the next generation to dream big.
