  • The purpose of this website is to inform you about the Speech & Language Program by gaining a better understanding of these services and to provide a variety of resources that may be helpful. The mission of the Program is to ensure opportunities for all students to acquire and develop skills necessary to reach their full potential as effective communicators.

    Speech and Language Services focus on improving students' communication skills within the educational setting.  Services work towards improving  students' memory, listening,  reasoning, vocabulary, comprehension and speaking skills. Additionally, some students may require articulation therapy to address overall clarity of their speech, fluency or voice skills.

    What is the Speech & Language Program?

    The Speech/Language program is a support service provided to students who demonstrate educationally significant needs in one or more areas of communication, which negatively impact the child's educational performance. 

    • Speech- (i.e. articulation, fluency, and voice disorders)
    • Language- (i.e. phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatic/social aspects of communication)  including comprehension and expression of language, language processing skills, and language-based literacy skills (i.e. phonological awareness)
    • Cognitive aspects of communication- (e.g. attention, memory, and problem solving)

    How are services delivered?

    Speech and language services are provided in various combinations, either directly in the classroom during classroom instruction or in the therapy room within small groups.  The speech pathologist and classroom teacher plan activities together that will help students achieve their communication goals within the classroom while using the classroom curriculum.  Students may be seen in a group or individually.

    How and when is progress reported?

    Speech therapists make every effort to attend and share information about students' progress during November teacher conferences when possible.  For those students who have formal Individual Education Plans, progress is reported on a trimester basis (in alignment with the report cards). For non-IEP students, progress is completed trimester marking periods in the form of a Speech and Language Progress Note.  Parents are always welcome to call or e-mail their Speech-Language therapist should they have any questions, comments, or concerns.
