Mr. Welch graduated from Plattsburgh Senior High School in 1988. He then attended SUNY Fredonia, earning a bachelors degree in Music Education from the Fredonia School of Music. His percussion teachers include Dick Rabideau, Peter Kriff, Tom Toner, Theodore Frazeur, and Kay Stonefelt. He has also has had lessons with Dave Mancini, Alessandra Belloni, Jim Chapin, and Glen Velez.
Mr. Welch has received a Bachelor of Science in Music Education and his Master of Music degree in Performance in Instrumental Conducting from the Fredonia School of Music. He has studied conducting with C. Rudolph Emilson, Maestro Harry John Brown, Christopher Izzo, Dr. Ronnie Wooten, Dr. Richard Larson, Dr. Russel Mikkelson, Dr. Paula Holcomb, Tim Reynish, Dr. Glenn Price, and Dr. David Rudge.
In addition maintaining a private teaching studio since 1989, he has performed with Medium Ride, the Horn & Rhythm Trio, the Pangaia Steel Band, the East Rochester All Stars, and Aretha Franklin. Mr. Welch also was a performer in the Westpoint Marimba Festival Orchestra under the direction of Fred Fennell, which set a world record for largest marimba ensemble in a live performance.
