Noteworthy NEWS...

Reading

The January Scholastic Book Order is due

January 27th

We are currently working in our Balanced Literacy Program with activities surrounding our current read aloud - Stargirl by Jerry Spinnelli.  This book is a narrative piece that fits into the realistic fiction genre.   We are working on our Literacy Stations with topics and guided readings surrounding the themes found throughout this text such as: bullying, life in the desert climate, and more.

The Literacy Skills we are focusing on are:

  • Reading complex texts
  • Writing TEXT BASED responses using the Better Answer Formula
  • Visualizing
  • Summarizing
  • Theme
  • Listening for Information
  • Researching
  • Speaking/Presenting

Students are working on word study as a part of our reading program.  Ask your child about the current spelling words and see if they can articulate the spelling rule or pattern.  Knowing the spelling rule or pattern helps students apply this to other words not included on the spelling list...and, therefore, they become better spellers!

  English Language Arts

On your mark, get set, WRITE!

**Be sure to check for links and updates on the Informational Writing subpage under the Content Area Information tab on the side to provide you with more resources and details.**

Our Informational and Explanatory Writing Unit is in full swing! This unit is FULL of opportunities to research, source material, and write!  As we begin, we will focus on identifying text structure and information presented in non-fiction pieces helps us to gain further knowledge.  Reading and Writing go hand in hand -- so we will be reading for information, reading to view mentor texts to use when we write, and reading to practice extracting pertinent information from complex text! Many great things are in store!

In addition, we work with a DAILY Language Review program to review and practice our langauge skills.  This includes editing and correcting flawed sentences, identfiying suffixes, prefixes, nouns, verbs... and so much more!  Check your child's ELA binder to see what we are reviewing this week!

*NOTE: Please be aware that all students are expected to write answers in COMPLETE, RESTATED responses!  We like to "SHOW WHAT WE KNOW" and give ourselves the BEST possible chance of being accurate!*
