Gates Chili Central School Rules for Athletes

in the Interscholastic Athletic Program

Training Rules for Gates Chili Athletes

Administrators, coaches, and parents must work together to impress the fact to our athletes that the rules will be enforced in and out of school and during the entire school year.  If a coach or administrator is notified of an infraction of the rules, the athlete is suspended from all activities until the procedures listed below are followed.  Unacceptable student behavior after a specific sport season may result in denial of participation for any future sport seasons.

1)      A conference with the athlete’s parents, the athlete, coach or coaches involved and the Athletic Director.

2)      After the conference the Athletic Director will determine the eligibility of the athlete in future athletic events/seasons.

Steroids/Drugs/Tobacco/Alcohol Use

A)                The use or possession of steroids, drugs (unless prescribed by a physician), tobacco, or alcoholic beverages by a student athlete are forbidden.

B)                 Any student athlete who seeks help or agrees to help for a substance abuse dependency problem will be granted a leave of absence from the team.  When the student athlete can present sufficient evidence to indicate he/she is no longer dependent upon a chemical substance; a three-member committee will be formed to review the information.  The committee will consist of the school nurse, a teacher, and a coach.  The review committee will make a recommendation to the Director of Athletics.  If the student athlete’s eligibility is restored, the school physician must give approval for participation.

Academic Eligibility & Attendance

In order to maintain athletic eligibility, student athletes must not have a failing grade (below 65%) in two or more classes at the end of the quarter.  Academic eligibility will be checked prior to the beginning of each sports season.  The 4th quarter “final” average grade for each course will be referenced for the fall sports season, the 1st quarter report card will be referenced for the winter sports season, and the 2nd quarter report card will be referenced for the spring sports season.   Academic eligibility will be monitored regularly and checked at interim time each quarter.

All athletes are expected to be in attendance at school in accordance with the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, 80% attendance rule.  While in school, the student athlete is expected to attend all of his/her classes.  If the student athlete is reported illegally absent from any of his/her classes, the coach or Director of Athletics, upon notification by the student’s building administrator, will suspend the student athlete from the next immediate athletic contest (this includes being unprepared for Physical Education Class).

Quitting or Leaving a Team

A)                If an athlete quits or leaves the team for any reason, he/she must notify the coach immediately.

B)                 If an athlete quits a team, he or she is not eligible for participation on another team in the same sport season, unless consent is granted by the first coach.

C)                If an athlete is asked to leave a team for disciplinary reasons, he or she cannot, under any circumstances, become a member of another team in that sport season.

D)                Athlete’s that quit a team are not eligible for any end of season awards.

Conduct of Athletes

A)                All athletes are expected to follow the school district “Code of Conduct”.

B)                 If a student has been placed in In-School Suspension for any reason they will be suspended 1 game and will not be allowed to practice.  The 1-game suspension will be at the discretion of the Athletic Director.

C)                If a student is placed in Out-of-School Suspension for any reason, they will not be allowed to practice or play in home or away games during the time they are in Out-of-School Suspension.  The student will receive a 2-game suspension when they return.

D)                Athletes and members of an athletic squad will at all times conduct themselves as ladies and gentlemen and demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times.  We will not tolerate any athlete or team member demonstrating disrespect for authority or unsportsmanlike behavior.  All rules are in effect the entire school year anywhere at anytime during the student athlete’s eligibility to participate.  This includes representing the school in post season tournaments or all-star competition.

E)                 The Gates Chili School District reserves the right to deny participation due to inappropriate behavior or character.

F)                 All students must ride the bus to and from athletic contests unless parent receives permission directly from the coach and personally provides transportation.  Only the parent’s child may ride with that parent.

G)                Students who choose to participate in a sport team activity outside of school may not participate in practices or games that conflict with their commitment to the school’s activity.  Students may participate in outside activities after fulfilling their commitment to their school team.

H)                In order for a student athlete to receive full recognition at the end of the season for his/her participation in the designated sport, that student athlete must complete his/her sport’s schedule to the full satisfaction of the team’s coach.  Failure to do so may result in the student athlete not being recognized for his/her participation.

I)                   All student athletes are expected to participate in all scheduled events, including banquets, unless they receive prior permission from their coach to be excused.  Failure to receive permission will result in disciplinary action.

Equipment

Team members are responsible for all equipment and uniforms issued.  Equipment or uniforms must be returned to the coach on the last day of competition.  Equipment or uniforms not returned must be paid for by the athlete.

Parents,

Your son or daughter has indicated an interest in trying out for one of our athletic teams.  As in all organizations, we have a set of rules that all athletes must follow.  Please make sure your athlete fully understands that these rules are in affect for everything they do in and out of school the entire school year.  In an effort to make our rules concerning our athletes clear and concise and to avoid misunderstanding at a later date, we have listed them on this consent form.

After reading these rules, we ask that you and your student athlete sign this consent form and return it to the Athletic Office at the High School prior to the first day of tryouts.                                                      .
