Rules for Athletes in the Interscholastic Athletic Program
Training Rules for Gates Chili Athletes
The purpose of these rules is to help student athletes become better citizens by seeking to demonstrate proper behavior and a good attitude at all times.These rules are designed to instill pride, discipline and team spirit in our student athletes.The student athlete is required to make a commitment to our community, school, team and coach. Adhering to the established rules and regulations is a condition that must be fulfilled for satisfactory participation in any sport.Enforcement of the rules and imposing disciplinary action for any violation is the responsibility of the coach and Director of Athletics.
Steroids/Drugs/Tobacco/Alcohol Use
The use or possession of steroids, drugs (unless prescribed by a physician), tobacco, or alcoholic beverages by a student athlete are forbidden.
Any student athlete who seeks help for a substance abuse dependency problem will be granted a leave of absence from the team.When the student athlete can present sufficient evidence to indicate he/she has successfully completed a substance abuse rehabilitation program, school administration, the coach, and the Director of Athletics will review the information and make the decision whether to reinstate the athlete’s eligibility.
Academic Eligibility & Attendance
In order to maintain athletic eligibility, student athletes must not have a failing grade (below 65%) in two or more classes at the end of the quarter.Academic eligibility will be checked prior to the beginning of each sports season.The 4th quarter “final” average grade for each course will be referenced for the fall sports season, the 1st quarter report card will be referenced for the winter sports season, and the 2nd quarter report card will be referenced for the spring sports season.If a student athlete is failing one course he/she may practice and compete.If a student athlete is failing two courses, he/she may practice but will not be permitted to compete for a period of 5 weeks until satisfactory progress is demonstrated with the next interim report. Academic eligibility will be monitored regularly and checked at interim time each quarter.
All athletes are expected to be in attendance at school in accordance with the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, 80% attendance rule.While in school, the student athlete is expected to attend all of his/her classes.If the student athlete skips any of his/her classes, the coach or Director of Athletics, upon notification by the student’s building administrator and/or teacher will not be permitted to attend practices or games on the day of the absence/offense.Repeated tardiness and absence will affect eligibility as determined by the coach and Director of Athletics.
Student athletes who skip or do not participate in physical education classes will not be permitted to attend practices or games on the day of the absence/offense.
Quitting or Leaving a Team
If a student athlete quits or leaves the team for any reason, he/she must notify the coach immediately.If a student athlete quits a team, he/she is not eligible for participation on another team in the same sport season, unless consent is granted by the first coach.If an athlete is asked to leave a team for disciplinary reasons, he/she cannot become a member of another team in that sport season.Athlete’s that quit a team are not eligible for any end of season awards.
Conduct of Athletes
1.All student athletes are expected to follow the school district “Code of Conduct”.
It is the responsibility of the student athlete to demonstrate self control and respect for others at all times, be they officials, spectators or other athletes.
Participation in athletics is a privilege and should not be abused by unsportsmanlike conduct.Student athletes are expected to deal with opponents with respect, shake hands after competition, and always respect the integrity and judgment of the officials.
4.If a student athlete has been placed in “In-School Suspension” for any reason, he/she will not be permitted to practice or compete during the time they are serving the suspension.
If a student athlete is “Out of School Suspended” for any reason he/she will not be permitted to practice or compete during the time of the suspension.The student athlete will receive a 2 game suspension when he/she returns.Repeated “out of school suspensions” will affect eligibility as determined by the coach and Director of Athletics.
All student athletes must ride the bus to and from athletic contests.If a student must leave an away contest with a parent a note must be signed by the Director of Athletics the day of the contest and then given to the coach.Only the parent’s son or daughter may ride home with the parent.Permission for a student athlete to leave with any other individual will not be given.
The student athlete must complete his/her sport’s season to the full satisfaction of the team coach in order to receive awards and recognitions.Failure to do so may result in the student athlete not being recognized for his/her participation.
Student athletes may participate in a sport team activity outside of school as long as it does not conflict with their commitment to the school team.
Equipment
Student athletes are responsible for all equipment and uniforms issued.Equipment or uniforms must be returned to the coach on the last day of competition.Equipment or uniforms not returned must be paid for by the athlete.
Your son or daughter has indicated an interest in trying out for one of our athletic teams.As in all organizations, we have a set of rules that all athletes must follow.Please make sure your athlete fully understands that these rules are in affect for everything they do in and out of school the entire school year.In an effort to make our rules concerning our athletes clear and concise and to avoid misunderstanding at a later date, we have listed them on this consent form.
After reading these rules, we ask that you and your student athlete sign this consent form and return it to the Athletic Office at the High School prior to the first day of tryouts.

PARENTAL CONSENT
I HAVE READ THE RULES AND REGULATIONS PERTAINING TO THE GATES CHILI ATHLETIC PROGRAM AND I AGREE TO THE “ATHLETIC TRAINING RULES” AS OUTLINED ON THIS FORMAND WILL SEE THAT MY SON/DAUGHTER ABIDES BY THE RULES.
