As part of the District’s ongoing commitment to creating a safe learning environment for our youth, one of our goals for the 2007/2008 school year is to continue to focus on character development through the 40 Developmental Assets.
What are the 40 Developmental Assets?
The 40 Developmental Assets are defined as positive experiences, relationships, opportunities and personal qualities young people need to grow up to be healthy, caring and responsible individuals.
Research has shown that the more Assets a student possesses, the less likely he/she is to engage in risk taking behaviors and the more likely he/she is to do well in school. The vision of the Search Institute, creators of the 40 Developmental Assets, is to create a world where all young people are valued and thrive. We at Gates Chili embrace this vision and support programs and activities that encourage children and families to actualize these realities into their lives. The 40 Developmental Assets are the framework that enables this mission to be accomplished.
Assets at Gates Chili
Schools, families and communities are joining together to ensure that all of our children have opportunities to acquire as many of the 40 Developmental Assets as possible. For the 2007/08 school year, we have chosen to focus on one Asset category per school quarter. These include: Boundaries and Expectations, Support, Positive Values, and Social Competencies.
Each of these Assets relates to the “Spartan Way” (Respect, Responsibility, Hard Work, Compassion). We want to encourage our students to embrace these qualities and become responsible, hard working, respectful and compassionate young adults. With all of us working together, we can “create the right conditions for learning” for all.
