Superintendent Stein has NOT made a recommendation to close an elementary school. It is the responsibility of the District to look at multiple options. A list of options was presented for the Board and community to provide feedback prior to making formal recommendations. Approximately 16 options (see attached) are currently under consideration for reducing the $3 million gap in the 2008-09 school budget.
The $1.6 million impact of Monroe County’s Sales Tax intercept (called the F.A.I.R. Plan by our County Executive), along with the ongoing high cost of energy, benefits and wages pose a very significant financial challenge for our District as we develop a 2008-2009 school budget. The Gates Chili community has a history of strong support for schools and the Gates Chili School District strives to maintain a reputation of a fiscally responsible organization in the midst of a difficult economy in our region and beyond.
The Gates Chili Board of Education has reviewed the challenges we face and began the difficult process of looking at all options and alternatives. In planning to meet these challenges, the Board would like to hear the community’s perspectives on the 2008-2009 budget.
The Board will conduct a workshop meeting on Monday, February 11 @ 7 PM in the High School auditorium. During the workshop, Gates Chili staff and community will have an opportunity to examine the options before us, comment on the alternatives, and offer suggestions.
Attached is a summary of the challenges and options under consideration.
