We are well into the first quarter at Gates Chili Middle School and the Rhinos Community has a lot to be proud of.   As a community, the following events have occurred:

  • Our 6th grade students visited the Amazing Maize Corn Maze as a teambuilding exercise.
  • Our 8th grade students participated in a science field trip to Black Creek Park to apply their knowledge of physical science in the field. Several different stations were developed to help engage students in hands on and relevant life experiences with key science concepts. The students were engaged in stations titled, Playground Physics, Astronomy and the Shadow Dance, Jungle Gym Drop, and Topographic Tango.
  • The middle school accelerated earth science students went to Fall Brook in Geneseo where they searched, found, and identified fossils from the Devonian Period (380 million years ago).
  • A seventh grade student in the Rhinos Community named, Abby had a dream last year of supporting Mali, Africa by helping the people there to Build a School in Africa.   Last year, she presented her idea to the faculty in the Rhinos Community and asked that they support her in her efforts to raise funds.  This year she has been working with retired teacher, Ms. Fenton, along with the help of two classmates, Meagan  and Katie , to put together an assembly for the Rhinos students to introduce them to the project.   She coordinated an effort to have Ms. Judy Lorimer, who runs the School in Africa Program, visit our school and explain the significance of the project.  The presentations occurred on Wednesday 10/21/09. It was a united effort to help get her to our school. Ms. Lorimer funded her own transportation from Massachusetts and Ms. Fenton housed her during her two day stay. After the assembly, Abby  kickedoff a Jar Wars competition in the Rhinos community to help fund the project. The fundraiser helped us to raise $1630.56!!!!!  This is absolutely amazing!!!! All of this money will help to support education in Africa!

  • Mr. Chase's homeroom won the competition, but Mrs. Carr's homeroom raised the most amount of money ($383.25).  Thank you to everyone who helped raise money. It was truly a team effort. It took us four days to roll all of the coins from the event!

These are just a few of the wonderful things our community has been doing.  Posted below are a few pictures from our guest speaker, Ms. Lorimer, representing, "Build a School in Africa."
