Transportation Handbook

This manual is intended to be a resource and a guide for the GATES CHILI CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT Transportation Employee. This employee Handbook provides information on district policies, operational procedures, and guidelines. The transportation employee will use this manual as an initial reference in finding information regarding departmental and district procedures.

Any time an employee has questions pertaining to district or departmental standard operating procedures, they are encouraged to visit the department supervisors or trainers for guidance. Transportation Services Employees are responsible for material contained in this manual, and are also required to stay familiar with the information contained in other manuals related to student transportation, which includes:

  • New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Driver’s Manual
  • New York State Commercial Driver’s License Manual
  • Current New York State Laws and Regulation publication
  • GCCSD Board Policy

DEPARTMENT GOALS

The role of the Gates Chili Transportation Department is to support the education of the students by providing safe, efficient transportation services for regular routes, special routes, extracurricular trips, and other district services that are necessary to support the educational process for our students. As student transportation providers, we must all work towards a common goal of achieving a perfect safety record.

The safe transport of the children in our care must always be our number one priority. As part of the educational team, we must support the district’s goal of ensuring that all students graduate with confidence and competence. Our conduct as transportation providers should always reflect a professional attitude that encourages positivity and success.

Mission Statement

The Transportation Department’s, consisting of office staff, mechanics, professional drivers, and attendants, is to work together as a team to provide effective and safe transportation at all times.

Attendance

    • Call in at 5:30 a.m. 585-247-4774 YOU must call yourself in absence.
    • You MUST speak with an office staff member or Director of Transportation.
    • You CANNOT LEAVE A MESSAGE ON THE ANSWERING MACHINE.
    • If calling in sick for the PM, please call by noon.
    • Only EOL can be requested in WINCAP not Sick days.
    • EOL’s are approved by human resources.
    • Documentation from Physician is required if out 3 or more consecutive days.
    • Documentation must have a return date with no restrictions.
    • Note is to be turned into dispatch upon return or emailed to the Assistant Director of Transportation or the Transportation Assistant.
    • Cannot return to work without note.
    • Out sick the day before or after a holiday will require a doctor’s note to get paid.
    • Annual Mammogram/Prostate Screening
    • You are allowed up to 4 hours for a mammogram/prostate related doctor visit.
    • You are expected to work until the time leave for mammogram/prostate doctor visit and return to work immediately following your appointment.
    • You must submit a time stamped receipt from your procedure upon return to work.
    • If all requirements are met, you will be reimbursed EOL time used.
    • Notification of school closing with be done via text or phone call                             
    • Sick days may be taken as ½ or full days.
    • If you use a half sick day, you will not be paid more than half of your assigned hours.
    • Drivers/Attendants can punch in up to twenty (20) minutes ahead of their scheduled punch in time. The time clock will automatically round to correct punch time.
    • If there is more than twenty (20) minutes between runs, punch out and then punch back in.
