Tier 1 Instruction

A diagram illustrating the components of rigorous personal learning, including authenticity, cultural responsiveness, inquiry-based learning, higher-order thinking, and integration of standards, content, and skills. At the heart of an effective educational experience is Quality First Instruction, also known as Tier 1 Instruction. In Gates Chili, this approach aligns to our Rigor Framework and our commitment to "Excellence for All Learners" by ensuring that each student receives high-quality, research-based teaching that emphasizes both academic and behavioral rigor. Tier 1 provides a culturally responsive and inclusive framework that challenges students to develop higher-order thinking skills and apply a deep understanding through the integration of academic and social-emotional learning.

Through inquiry-based and authentic learning experiences, students consistently practice, reflect on, and refine their skills, ensuring that they achieve high levels of personal and academic success. This proactive approach to instruction supports each student from the very beginning, promoting equity and reducing the need for later interventions. Quality First Instruction at Tier 1 is essential for creating an environment where each student can thrive, reinforcing the importance of a comprehensive educational program that emphasizes rigor and excellence for all learners.

Elementary Tier 1 Hub

Here, you’ll find resource documents created to support consistent and aligned instructional practices. By accessing these materials, you can ensure that all students receive the foundational academic support they need to succeed.

Instructional minutes

Instructional minute guidance has been updated for the 2024-25 school year to align to our program focus.

Everyday Math K-5

The elementary math program implements Everyday Math in grades K-5. All components of the program should be implemented within a math workshop based on the instructional minutes provided. This includes the warm-up and lesson (focus & practice). The math workshop should have time for differentiated small group instruction during the lesson component. During small group time, students can work independently on iReady and/or Reflex. The daily routines for grades K-2 (i.e.calendar, weather, coins, etc.) can occur outside the math workshop. For example, during a morning meeting. Please reach out to your building math teacher with any questions.

Screening assessments

Screening assessments are an important component of a Tier 1 instructional program, as they provide an early and accurate picture of students' foundational skills. By identifying students' strengths and areas of need, these assessments allow us to plan instruction to meet the needs of each learner. Additionally, the data gathered from screening assessments helps to inform instructional decisions, ensuring that the core curriculum is effective for our elementary students.

iReady expectations

Grades 1-5 will continue to take the iReady Diagnostic three times a year. Please refer to the guidance document for specific grade level expectations for the personalized instruction component.
